This makes keeping your troops warm a real necessity, and removing enemy sources of warmth a valid strategy. Not only does snow hamper your visibility and your troops’ movement, it can also be a killer, freezing units to death unless they’re near a fire or in cover. There’s plenty of variety to the missions, as the action moves from huge, city-wide battles to tense, small-squad operations in the wilds, and there’s plenty of opportunity to explore one of the sequel’s best new features: weather that actually has an impact on how you play. Once you’re actually playing, however, the Eastern Front setting turns out to be brilliant. ![]() Not only are the cinematics weak, but it’s hard to balance the cut-scenes themes of ‘war is hell’ and ‘does the end justify the means’ when the rest of the game seems hell-bent on answering ‘sure, but at least it’s spectacular’ and ‘yup, bung another squad of conscripts on the firing line.’ It’s played out as a series of flashbacks for a Soviet lieutenant being interrogated in a post-war gulag, and this framing structure is easily the worst thing about the game. ![]() Perhaps its smartest idea is to move the action away from Normandy in 1944 and to the Eastern Front in 1941.
